Want to grow your own food? Lack the land or know-how? Want to get to know some neighbors?

The Village Garden, located at 121 South Johnson Street, was started in 2011 through a grant from United Way. By the generous allowance of landowner John Amburgey, the once sand volleyball court has been transformed into The Village Garden.

In 2012, nine raised beds were built and installed in the garden. One of the beds serves as the demonstration bed for beginning gardeners to learn from the garden coordinator, Joan Zachariah. The other eight beds (about 5′x10′) are available to inexperienced, beginning, landless, or low-income community members. Each gardener is assigned a plot and guided in their planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting of the plot. Gardeners are also given opportunities to attend garden educational programs sponsored by ReStore Community Center. Just how much can you really grow in such a small space? More than you’d guess!
